Feature & Follow (20)

Q: Do you mind books with similar ideas to other books? Similar concepts, backgrounds, retellings or pulled-to-publish fanfic?

A: Well, it depends on the book or author. Recently, I'm sure most people have heard, that a big publishing house signed a Twilight fan-fiction author to a two-book deal. That deal, in my opinion, was just to sell books and nothing else.

However, after saying that, I do enjoy Jane Austen fiction and spinoffs. It is called Austenesque fiction. Stephanie Barron writes a wonderful mystery series where Jane Austen is the sleuth. They are a lot of fun to read.

In the end, it depends on the book and author. There are some that deserved to be imitated (which is the best form of flattery) and others do not. It is up so us to decide which is which.

And I now I'm stepping down from my little soapbox!

  2. Agreed. Some are good while others suck. It's all in the execution. Old follower via email. My FFs are at Musings on Fantasia and LKHill. Happy Friday! :D

  4. I loathe the P2P fanfic. Fanfic is supposed to be for fun, not for money. Oh well. I'm a new GFC follower... (after I saw you had problem with your GFC. Since I still have a google account, I can follow people even without having GFC on my own blog) I am also a new Networked Blogs follower. I was already following via linky.

Here's my FF post for this week.

    Have a fantastic Friday!

  6. Haven't heard about that. But yeah, seems like a way to make money. But I don't mind retellings, I love the fairy tale and mythology ones!

Books with similar ideas or themes are good too. I like reading them because they are always different. Kelley Armstrong and Amanda Carlson both wrote about the only female werewolf and those stories are sooo very different from one another!

    Here's my Follow Friday

    Have a GREAT weekend!

  7. I agree. I usually don't like fanfiction (it's not fair or respectful to the original author), but when it comes to certain retellings, I'm all in. That has much to do with the 'age' of a book (classic stories were written hundreds of years ago and are known worldwide) and the writing of that retelling. No to stories that are similar in any way, but fresh and original tellings of tales everyone knows and loves? Yes please.
New follower and happy Friday! :)
