Why I Love to Read: The Independent Bookstore

Why I Love to Read

The Independent Bookstore

On Monday, I decided to go to my favorite independent bookstore in Oklahoma City. As soon as I walked into Full Circle Bookstore, I was asked if I needed help finding anything which I responded, “no, thank you. I’m just looking.” I look around to an amazing sight. Everywhere I see there are floor-to-ceiling shelves full of books, tables full of books, racks full of books. Books, books and more books! There are nook and crannies everywhere and several cozy fireplaces. You never know what you will find around the next corner. You will never have this kind of experience at a large bookstore chain. It’s quiet, charming, and full of life!

I pretty much know what book I want to buy. Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern has been on to-read list for a long time. I knew exactly where it was in the store. Once I had my prize, I, of course, had to do some serious browsing. I saw so many books that I want to read, such as, The Dovekeeper and The Rules of Civility. That just gives me another excuse to come back. I wandered over to the children’s section to find some goodies for my girls. I picked up a BabyMouse book for my seven-year old and Mr. Putter and Tabby for my five-year old. Once again, I saw floor-to-ceiling children’s books. It’s a wonderful sight! My last purchase was a box of Jane Austen note cards  It was a nice little shopping trip!

After my shopping spree, I went to the cafĂ© in the bookstore. I ordered a three-cheese sandwich with strawberry marmalade. Very yummy! I sat at a table facing the fireplace and got out my new book. It was the perfect place to start a new book. Soon my lunch came and it was delicious. I ate and I read. Does it get much better than that? I don’t think so!

How about that for a reason for loving to read?! There is nothing better than a beautiful bookstore.  I could wander for hours and not get bored. It is my happy place.

I hope the independent bookstore is not fading away. It’s a wonderful place to have quality time to yourself or meet your friends. The staff can give you sincere recommendations on what your next book will be. Furthermore, it’s a wonderful way to support your local community. Shop local whenever you can!

My ultimate dream is to open my own bookstore in Norman. I did some serious research into it and discovered that it isn't feasible right now. However, I will not give up that dream. I want to own a cozy place filled with books where people can come and share their love for reading. One of these days I know it will happen!

Why do you love to read?

  1. I wish there would be independent bookstores here in Finland but I haven't seen any :(
I love to read, because it's relaxing and takes you away from the present. You get to imagine whole new worlds and characters.. <3

  2. I LOVE Full Circle. Listening to you describe it just made me feel good. I always enjoying picking out the book I want and finding a comfy chair somewhere in a quiet little corner and starting the book. Every time I pick it up to continue, it reminds me of the cozy feeling. And the cafe is wonderful! Keep up the good work :)

  3. I completely understand your dream because I have the same one :) I would absolutely love to open a bookstore here in my little town. We have a small chain store here and I suppose it does the trick but it's not cozy. You know what i mean!
